When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude for "a good dentist near me" or "a wedding photographer in Austin", the assistant pieces together an answer from what it can read about local businesses. Most small business websites are built for people, not for AI: the important facts (where you work, what you do, how to book, your licence) are scattered across pages or hidden in images.
An llms.txt is a plain-text file at the top of your website that puts those facts in one place. It is a proposed standard (llmstxt.org), so not every AI tool reads it yet, but it takes two minutes and it never hurts. Most generators crawl your site and list your pages; this one asks for the facts a local customer and an AI assistant actually need.

Not on its own, and nobody can guarantee what an AI says. AI assistants also weigh your reviews, your Google Business Profile and what other sites say about you. llms.txt makes your own facts easy to read; it is one step, not the whole job.
Upload the file to the top folder of your site with your host’s file manager, or use an SEO plugin that lets you edit llms.txt. Then open yourwebsite.com/llms.txt to check it shows.
